Brass plaque reads “repel boarders”. Pirates in the 18th and 19th centuries sought to capture ships for their booty rather than sink them. Ships attacked would raise the hue and cry to repel boarders meaning to arm to the teeth with all available weapons to fight the attackers. Often items used for the ships operation were found to be useful as weapons such as the belaying pin and monkey fist as clubs and striking devices.
