Quick history lesson. Useless knowledge which you will soon learn I am a wealth of. So this piece is made on a century old faded red barn wood. Did you ever think why nearly every barn you pass is red. I did. So decades ago, while pondering the universe I happen to be with an ancient farmer friend of mine, (he would pole ax me between the eyes if he knew I described his as such. We were at his farm and I was struck, so I asked - “why are everyone’s barns red?”So he turn and looked me in the eye and said “Ross, I thought you were and educated man”. He informed me that if most of the barns are red and the production of red paint is very high to paint all these barns – well son have you every heard of economies of scale. I had but this was my ancient farmer friend. I say yes. “Well you should know that red paint is the cheapest paint anyone can buy” “Draft horse shoe”. Real deal – that horse shoe has cleats because draft ( work horses pulled just about everything from plows to stumps out of the ground ), work for a living, they need traction. “Blinders”, placed on the work horses head to blind their peripheral vision – I think in case he saw a fine little filly, but I could be wrong. “Leather Reigns”, vintage and may I proffer perhaps antique. I search far and wide for these things. They cannot be bought, I have checked, even with Tandy Leather. Some of the reigns I encounter are 20’ long. Course they are nearly beyond salvation. They are dung and mud covered and have been exposed to the elements for decades. These long reigns were essential for a farmer from centuries ago to guide his beast of burden as he plowed his fields or guided a wagon full of his goods to a place of sale.
